Herrington Carmichael Announces Promotions

Herrington Carmichael, ranked as a ‘Leading Firm’ by the Legal 500 and named one of The Times Best Law Firms 2023, announced the promotions of eight of their legal professionals, effective from 1 October 2023.

The firm has seen significant growth in recent years through investing in its people – their education, careers, and specialisms.

Managing Partner, Yavan Brar, congratulates all who have been promoted and had this to say:

We are pleased to recognise the outstanding contributions of these individuals. They have demonstrated remarkable dedication to advancing our client’s interest, their own business development and specialties, and mentoring their colleagues. We look forward to their ongoing success and leadership within our growing firm.

The promoted individuals are:

Anna Svensson, Alex Harper and Joel Gocool all joined HC in 2021 having only been qualified for just over 2 years. Now, another 2 years later, all three are being promoted to Senior Solicitors within their respective teams. Anna joined the growing Real Estate team and specialises in advising both Landlords and Tenants. Alex forms part of the Employment team and continually impresses with her specialism in equal pay. Joel works in the Commercial team and specialises in franchise law, an area he has grown in and one he is leading their investment into.

Chris Gemson is being promoted to Senior Solicitor. He joined in 2015 as a legal assistant and subsequently secured his spot in the trainee programme. He is now stepping up to Senior Solicitor with a specialism in Banking law.

Melissa Deutrom is being promoted to Legal Director. She joined as a NQ solicitor and quickly progressed to a Senior Solicitor within 4 years of being with the firm. Now, 2 years later, she is progressing once again to Legal Director and specialises in Financial Services and Business Ownership.

Rebecca Habgood de Burgh joined with the acquisition of Bonnetts and has gone from strength to strength under the leadership of Joshua Watkins in a short space of time. Rebecca has developed into a senior role and is now taking the step up to Legal Director.

Cesare McArdle and Matthew Lea have both been promoted to Partners. Starting off as trainees ten years ago, their growth and development has been impressive and we’re proud to have them working for HC. They will be joining several other Partners at the firm who have followed similar paths. Both Cesare and Matt were early adopters of the specialisation programme and continue to develop their thriving practice areas. Cesare specialises in Construction law and Matthew in Tech M&A.

The promotions further demonstrate the firm’s continued investment in its people, which provides ongoing opportunity for career progression and specialisation. This allows the continuation of practical, easy to understand legal advice to the firm’s ever-expanding client base.

This reflects the law and market position at the date of publication and is written as a general guide. It does not contain definitive legal advice, which should be sought in relation to a specific matter.
