Family Route visa applications

There are several different ways to join a family member in the UK.  These rules change depending on the type of visa your family member has in the UK.

In most cases, you can apply to join your spouse or partner, child, or bring in an elderly parent or a relative to whom you will provide long-term care.  These applications usually provide a route to long term settlement in the UK.  Initial applications will be granted for 3 years with the option to extend provided the family circumstances still subsist.  In many of these routes, there is a requirement for English language and to show finances of at least £18,600 for salaried employment or £62,500 of cash savings.

Family members of workers or students can normally apply for a dependant visa.  The visa granted to the family member will be linked to the main applicant’s visa.  Some may be extended to achieve settlement, others such as Tier 2 Intra Company Transfers do not. 

An EEA family permit is also an option if you are coming from outside the European Economic Area and have a family member in the UK who is of EEA or Swiss nationality.  There are other routes under the “family” banner, including the much-publicised Surinder Singh route.

Family visits are permitted under the General Visitor route.  Visitor must not take up employment and must not stay beyond 6 months in any single visit.  Frequent visits may be queried at the border if a family member is entering as a visitor merely to avoid a visa as a family member visa.
