The new Identity Verification App
As a response to COVID-19, UKVI is amending the way that it processes applications. In some cases, UKVI is allowing biometrics (fingerprints and photographs) to be reused, if they have already been recorded in a previous application. UKVI and UKVCAS have been working together to create a way of submitting facial images using a new Identity Verification (IDV) app.
When a client is asked to use the IDV app, they need to take a photo of:
- Themselves; and
- Their travel documentation.
By verifying their ID in this method, UKVI can reuse biometrics. This means that clients no longer have to schedule and attend a biometrics appointment. Previously, the average cost of a paid-for appointment was £110, so it also reduces the cost to the client. App users are guided through the process, ensuring that it is easy to use and that the photos taken and submitted to UKVI are in the correct format. Therefore, this is a quicker and more convenient way of getting biometrics and is expected to speed up the application process.
