Alex Collinson

Alex advises on a wide range of commercial law projects including supply of goods and services agreements, international trade agreements, business terms and conditions, IT agreements and large scale business to business commercial arrangements. Alex also provides commercial support for due diligence exercises in respect of corporate transactions.
Alex specialises in intellectual property law including trade marks, copyright protection and design rights. Alex regularly provides strategic intellectual property law advice to businesses and individuals seeking to protect their intellectual property both in the UK and internationally.
Alex joined Herrington Carmichael as a commercial paralegal in June 2019 and qualified as a chartered legal executive in December 2022. Alex then qualified as a solicitor in June 2023. Alex also has experience with working in-house, having previously worked in the Legal Department at McLaren Automotive Limited where he assisted the legal team on a variety of commercial law related matters.
Outside of work, Alex is a particularly keen golfer and plays as much as possible at Hartley Wintney Golf Club. Alex also enjoys playing 5 a side football and going to support Leeds United at Elland Road.
Notable Projects
- Assisting with the commercial aspects of a $60M acquisition of a NYSE listed satellite communications company.
- Been on secondment at several clients in order to provide general commercial law assistance (including a global restaurant business and, most recently, a financial services company).
- Assisting with the drafting and negotiation of an outsourcing contract with large well known UK bank – The contract value in the region of £80 million.
- Advised a marketing agency in respect of its contract with a national gym provider.
- Assisted with amending and negotiating a services agreement between our client (a provider of artificial intelligence data solutions) and a large sports governing body.
- Assisted our client, who is a well-known business in the artificial intelligence industry, in relation to a contract to be entered into with US sports giant and its associated and affiliated company.
- Franchisor – drafting and preparing an intellectual property licence agreement between our client and its sister company in relation to its franchise portfolio.
- Advising an IT solutions and telecoms provider in respect of its proposed trade marks and kick starting our client’s trade mark portfolio by filing a suite of trade mark applications on our client’s behalf.
- Design right registration – Advised a specialist wastewater contractor in respect of its proposed design and successfully registering our client’s design with the Intellectual Property Office.
- Advising clients in respect of the initial stages of intellectual property disputes (including in respect of any allegations made against them in respect of committing the tort of “passing off” or any allegations made against my clients for trademark infringement, copyright infringement and design right infringement).
- Advising clients on the recommended procedures to adopt in response to an IPR infringement and to limit the risk of reoccurrence.
