Naturalisation as a British citizen
If you are over 18 and have been living in the UK for the last five years (or three years if you are married to or a civil partner of a British citizen), you may be able to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen.
Naturalisation is the most common way to become a British citizen and is available once you have been residing in the UK and free from immigration control for 12 months. (Migrants married to British Citizens do not require 12 months free of immigration control). This route has strict requirements on time outside the UK and you must pass a Life in the UK Test as well as an English test (in most cases).

Registering as a British citizen
Whether and when you can register as a British citizen is different depending on who your parents are, when you were born and whether you already have some form of British nationality. There are also different rules if you have previously renounced British citizenship or you are a returning resident.
