It has been said that there are two inevitabilities in life: death and taxes. The administration of an estate is frequently an emotional combination of both.
The death of a close relative or friend is naturally a sad occasion of loss. As solicitors we seek to offer a helpful and sympathetic ear and, in our own way, to help with the grieving process.
When somebody dies their financial affairs need to be concluded, their wishes have to be given effect and tax that is due on their estate must be paid. Quite often the need to deal with these issues can lend a sense of purpose to the early stages of the grieving process.
People’s affairs range in extent and complexity enormously. Some estates are simple and can be dealt with by an unqualified person. In such cases we will usually encourage a family to deal with matters themselves - lending a hand only if it makes financial sense to do so.
In more complex estates it is common that any saving of fees achieved by attempting to administer the estate yourself will be more than outweighed by tax pitfalls and other traps that lie in wait for the unwary.
Between us we have many years experience and there are few scenarios that we have not met. On the rare occasions we do come across something new we will tell you and quickly take further advice or refer you on to other experts, if appropriate.
